Google Photos Introduces "Memories" Tab and Redesign
Google Photos is undergoing a small yet significant redesign. Users in the US will now have a dedicated "Memories" tab at the bottom of the app's interface. The new tab will display your most memorable captures in a scrapbook-style layout, organizing photos and videos by date with events like trips and birthdays automatically appearing in the timeline. By tapping on a memory, users can view all associated captures and watch a curated slideshow.
"You can save your favorite memories to the Memories view or create new ones from scratch. The feature also allows you to easily add, remove, or hide specific photos and videos within the Memories view," said Brandon Im, senior product manager for Google Photos.
Sharing is a key component of the updated experience, with access to the share sheet just a tap away. Users can invite friends and family to contribute their favorite shots to a collection. Additionally, a forthcoming feature will enable users to turn their favorite memories into videos, making it simpler to share groups of photos on social media.
Accompanying the redesigned tab is an experimental feature involving generative AI suggesting titles for new memory collections. Users will initially see three title suggestions and have the option to request more. An 'Add hint' feature allows users to input prompts if the AI-generated titles are not accurate. This feature is currently limited to select US accounts but will expand globally in the following months.
